A retroflector is a device or surface that reflects light back to its source with a

minimum of dispersal. This would cause the retroflector material to appear

brightest to the observer nearest or directly behind the light source. The luminous

intensity or the brightness of the object reflecting back the light is a function of

colour, size and condition of the reflective material.

Candela is the power emitted by a light source in a particular direction. A common wax candle emits one candela or one unit of luminous intensity.

The CSA minimum standard is 300 Candela. That means the minimum intensity reflected back by the retroflector should be at least 300 Candela. Based on the working environment, logic may preclude using garments with this minimum, which has been established under laboratory conditions.

HRC levels are rated by the minimum amount of calories per square centimeter. HRC Levels are rated from 0-4 which determine the amount of flame resistance needed based on specific  jobs. An HRC Rating of 0 means little or no risk and an HRC Rating of 4 would mean the highest level of risk, which would require clothing with a minimum ATPV rating of 40.

What the Heck is ATPV Rating?

Protective clothing comes with an ATPV Rating (Arc Thermal Performance Value) which is measured in cal/cm2 and determines the level of protection the clothing will provide in the event of an electrical explosion or arc flash. The higher the ATPV rating, the greater the protection.  As mentioned above, the higher the HRC Level, the higher the ATPV rating is required for protection.
